There is a major upheaval of the Manchester City squad that is set to continue in the summer. City has begun the rebuilding process as we saw in January as they made a host of signings to replenish Pep Guardiola’s squad. That process will continue in the summer as a host of City’s senior players look set to depart the club.

Manchester City could be in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer. A report from Sacha Tavolieri for SkySports indicates that Ederson is one of a host of players City has reportedly asked to leave the club in the summer. Focusing on Ederson, if he does leave the club, City will be in the market for a new number-one keeper. Stefan Ortega could step into the void left by Ederson’s potential departure. But you do sense that City will step into the market to replace Ederson if he does depart in the summer.

Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato has reported that FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa is looming as City’s potential replacement for Ederson. Furthermore, Aouna reports that Costa is City’s first choice to replace Ederson. Aouna further reports that Manchester City have already made initial contact with Costa’s camp ahead of a potential summer move.

Replacing Ederson is no easy task but Manchester City may be targeting the right keeper in Diogo Costa.

If Ederson does leave Manchester City this summer replacing what he brings to Pep Guardiola’s squad will be no simple task. Not only is he a quality keeper his ability with his feet is almost irreplaceable. It has been a key part of Manchester City’s play since Ederson arrived at the club from Benfica. Ederson’s distribution is still a weapon for Manchester City as we have seen this season with his recent assist for Omar Marmoush against Newcastle and against Chelsea when his long balls were crucial to City’s win.

If Ederson is going to leave Manchester City in the summer that is what City will have to replace. Finding a keeper who can do what the Brazilian does is almost impossible. But FC Porto keeper Diogo  Costa is a quality alternative. He has shown both for FC Porto and Portugal that he is a quality keeper. Costa is a quality shot stopper and he is also adept at playing with the ball at his feet. Those attributes do seem suited to playing in a Pep Guardiola side if that is move Manchester City have to make in the summer.

An upheaval is coming at Manchester City. They may be on the lookout for a new keeper based on Sacha Tavolieri’s report. Diogo Costa could be the ideal keeper to slot into Pep Guardiola’s squad so it is a story to monitor going forward as Diogo Costa does seem to be the ideal replacement for Ederson if it comes to that.
