The Los Angeles Galaxy are just days away from their first of 34 regular season games. Their sixth title defense begins on Sunday.
With the roster pretty much finalized, we see a bevy of veterans on the squad. Head coach Greg Vanney will have veteran defenders Maya Yoshida and Miki Yamane, in addition to midfielder Marco Reus and goalkeeper John McCarthy. Eriq Zavaleta and Diego Fagundez are also in the same demographic.
All four of those players are in their 30's as they were a part of the team that saw the Galaxy hoist a sixth MLS Cup last season. In the winter, general manager Will Kuntz has added midfielder Sean Davis (in place of Gaston Brugman), signed defender Mathias Jorgensen, and brought in striker Christian Ramirez (all of them are also in their 30's).
A youth movement is upon is in Los Angeles, especially for the Galaxy. The team signed defender Ascel Essengue who is 21 years old. A pair of new midfielders, Lucas Sanabria and Elijah Wynder, are 21 as well.
The Los Angeles Galaxy announced in early September last year that a pair of young defenders were named to the United States U18 Men's Youth National Team. Jose Magana and Harbor Miller were those two players.
With more than one starter for the LA Galaxy's back line nearing retirement, Magana and Miller could be primed to take over the reigns on defense. Yoshida turns 37 and Yamane turns 32 this season. Rarely used Zavaleta is already 32, himself.
Prior to his call up to the U18 Youth National Team for the United States, Magana was also announced third annual MLS NEXT All-Star Game before the 4th of July last summer. The 18-year-old center back will be adding to his experience on the field with the Ventura County FC.
Miller, who is just 17 years old, is from Fullerton, California. He primarily plays in right back.
In 20 appearances at the MLS Next Pro level, Miller has scored once and recorded two assists. He has taken the field for over 1,500 minutes thus far, including a full 90 minutes in his lone playoff appearance.
Just like Magana, this third player also got his name called up to sign a homegrown contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Keeper Owen Pratte and defender Riley Dalgado were signed, too.
Vincente Garcia turns 15 this summer. Not only has he represented the United States at the U15 National Team level, but he has done so for Mexico, too.
"Today's signings represent the great work that has been done by the LA Galaxy Academy staff over the past three years. [Owen, Riley,] Pepe and Vinny have excelled within our professional development pathway and we are extremely proud to be with them as they begin their professional careers with the LA Galaxy."Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
The LA Galaxy have to make more decisions down the road like moving on from star talent Riqui Puig (the way they did with Brugman and Marky Delgado). Garcia plays center midfield.
Thus, he (along with Magana and Miller) have a path before them to make it to the MLS stage. These teenagers may be the next set of stars to shine within the LA Galaxy.
