FC Barcelona are set to kick off their Copa del Rey campaign soon and will aim for a deep run in the competition. For the Catalan club, the tournament represents an excellent opportunity for their young squad to secure silverware under Hansi Flick’s leadership.
With the January transfer window now open, it could signal some activity for the Catalan club. While significant arrivals are unlikely due to ongoing challenges in registering their summer signings, there could still be a few departures on the horizon.
One player who could be on the exit ramp is Eric Garcia. As per Fichajes, the Spanish defender is now moving closer to leaving the club and joining Girona after having spent last season on loan at the fellow Catalan club.
It’s easy to forget that Eric Garcia is still just 23 years old. Having been in the spotlight for so long, it feels like he should be much older. However, the Spaniard is still at an age where he is developing and refining his game.
This season, Hansi Flick has rarely utilized Eric Garcia in his preferred center-back role, instead opting to deploy him as a pivot when rotating Pedri or Marc Casadó. The 23-year-old has also been brought on to help close out games.
Last season, on loan at Girona under Michel, Eric Garcia emerged as one of the best defenders in La Liga. Extensively used across defense, both as a center-back and as a right-back, the Spanish tactician managed to unlock the Spaniard’s potential.
Unfortunately for Eric, the competition for places at Barcelona is fierce. With the anticipated arrival of Jonathan Tah, it will be challenging for him to become more than a reliable squad player. If his career ambitions are higher, a move away from the club might be his best option.
It remains to be seen if Hansi Flick is willing to let Eric leave mid-season, especially at a time when the depth in the pivot position is rather minimal. Only time will tell how it plays out and let’s wait and see if Eric Garcia remains at the club for much longer.
