On Sunday, it was decided by the Köln joint committee that Kwasniok will be their number one candidate to replace Friedhelm Funkel as their permanent head coach. It would be the second time that Köln have appointed a coach from Paderborn having moved from Steffen Baumgart in 2021. To some success, Baumgart took the Rhein club to the UEFA Conference League.
Following the appointment of Thomas Kessler as sporting director, the club moved quickly to secure the services of Ragnar Ache and Ísak Jóhannesson for a combined €10m. Both players were top performers in the 2. Bundesliga last season and will significantly strengthen the squad.
