Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro has confirmed that the club will not stand in Xabi Alonso’s way if he decides to leave the club amid Real Madrid links.

Alonso’s future has been a major talking point since his exploits with Die Werkself last season.

He was strongly linked with a move to Madrid but decided to stick with the champions for one more season. Madrid have since been keeping tabs on the highly rated Spanish tactician.

With Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Santiago Bernabeu now up in the air, Alonso is once again under the spotlight and Leverkusen know it’s only a matter of time before he leaves the club.

“We have a gentleman’s agreement with Xabi Alonso for his exit,” Carro said (via Fabrizio Romano).

“If a team in which Xabi Alonso has played comes, we would sit down to talk and we would not prevent him.”

Alonso’s contract with the champions runs until 2026, but the club wants the Spaniard to make a decision in the next few weeks so they can plan for a potential successor.

“If Xabi Alonso does end up going somewhere else, then we have to make that clear to him in the next few weeks, and we will discuss it with him in the next few weeks,” Carro told Sky.

“We will not wait until the end of the season. This is a decision that cannot be dragged out much longer but must be decided relatively quickly.”

Last season, Alonso led Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title win and the DFB-Pokal. He also took them to the Europa League final, but they were undone by Atalanta.

He’s on course to relinquish the Bundesliga crown to Bayern Munich, but Madrid believe he’s the ideal candidate to succeed Ancelotti.

After the humiliating Champions League quarter-final exit, reports claim Ancelotti will not finish the season at Madrid.

In fact, the Italian is already in talks with Brazil to take over from Dorival Junior.
