Manchester City could be subject to transfer interest from ambitious officials working on recruitment at Championship newcomers Wrexham, according to reports.
After sealing successive promotions under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham are wasting no time in trying to bolster their squad for the demands of Championship football.
Known for their willingness to make bold moves in the market, the Welsh side appear ready to compete with more established second-tier outfits in pursuit of one of Manchester City’s brightest Academy products in Callum Doyle.
The 21-year-old has spent the last four seasons gaining senior experience through loan spells at Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City, and most recently Norwich City. His consistent performances at Championship level have made him a sought-after commodity this summer, particularly with his future at the Etihad Stadium increasingly uncertain.
Doyle’s own comments towards the end of last season suggested he was ready to settle permanently after years on the move. Speaking during his loan at Norwich, he said, “I think a permanent move is the next aim for me. It’s my fourth loan now, and I’ve been all over the country… it just depends on what happens in the summer, to be honest.”
Now, according to a new report from Football League World, Wrexham are interested in signing Manchester City’s in-demand central defensive talent, but face strong competition from across the Championship.
It is pointed out that all of Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City are all interested in a second deal to bring Doyle to their respective clubs, having taken on the player on loan agreements earlier on in his development.
The situation marks a continuation of the battle for Doyle’s services reported previously, with City valuing the defender between £8 million and £10 million, having already rejected a £6.5 million bid from Germany in June.
For Wrexham, landing Doyle would represent a major statement of intent ahead of their first Championship campaign. However, the lure of a return to a familiar environment could give Leicester, Norwich, or Coventry an edge in negotiations, with all three able to point to Doyle’s past success in their systems.
As the window progresses, much may depend on how aggressively Wrexham’s Hollywood-backed ownership is willing to invest to beat established Championship clubs in the market. If Doyle’s preference for a permanent home aligns with Wrexham’s ambitions, the summer could yet see one of City’s most prized youth defenders anchoring the defence at the Racecourse Ground.
