Gundogan Set to Stay at Manchester City Amid Galatasaray Interest

Ilkay Gundogan looks set to remain at Manchester City beyond the summer transfer window despite continued interest from Galatasaray, according to Football Insider. The 34-year-old midfielder, who has just one year left on his contract, is valued highly by Pep Guardiola for his leadership and experience as City reshape their squad.

Senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke reported on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast that while this summer may have been the club’s last chance to secure a transfer fee for Gundogan, both manager and player are content for him to stay put.

“This summer is probably City’s last chance to really cash in on him,” O’Rourke explained. “But I feel with the changes that are going on at City, they have spent heavily to reshape the squad and Pep would like to keep a bit of experience around. His experience and leadership would be a valuable asset for this new-look City side.”

Guardiola’s Desire for Experience

City’s transfer activity this summer has largely focused on bringing in younger players, creating a more dynamic and athletic squad. However, Guardiola is keen to balance youthful energy with proven winners in the dressing room. Gundogan, a veteran of multiple Premier League and Champions League triumphs, fits that bill perfectly.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider earlier this summer that Galatasaray had been pushing to sign Gundogan, but the manager’s stance is now clear. Guardiola’s plan to streamline the squad will not come at the expense of losing one of his most trusted midfield generals.

Player’s Willingness to Stay

Despite speculation linking him with a move to Turkey, Gundogan has shown no desire to depart. “Gundogan still has a role to play under Pep Guardiola,” O’Rourke added. “The player himself, despite constant links to Galatasaray and Turkey, is going to be happy to stay at Man City as well. I think the player will remain at City for the season and then maybe he could leave on a free transfer when his contract expires.”

This decision is a significant show of mutual loyalty. City recognise the value of Gundogan’s presence, not only on the pitch but also in mentoring the next generation. For Gundogan, remaining at the club offers another chance to compete for the highest honours.

Rodri’s Future Also in Focus

Alongside the Gundogan situation, Guardiola is intent on securing Rodri’s long-term future. The Spanish midfielder, widely regarded as one of the best in his position, could soon be placed on the same wage level as Erling Haaland. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told Football Insider that Rodri may be handed a contract worth around £525,000 per week, matching Haaland and cementing his status as a cornerstone of Guardiola’s side.

With Real Madrid showing interest, City are determined to keep hold of Rodri. Securing both Rodri and Gundogan for the coming season would ensure Guardiola has the midfield stability to match the club’s ambitions across domestic and European competitions.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Manchester City fans, keeping Ilkay Gundogan for another season makes perfect sense. His leadership cannot be bought or easily replaced, especially in a side undergoing significant change. Fans will remember how he stepped up in key moments, from decisive goals in title run-ins to his composure on the European stage.

While some supporters might see financial logic in cashing in before his contract ends, there is a strong case for valuing his experience over short-term profit. With the squad now packed with younger talent, having a figure like Gundogan in the dressing room could be the difference in tight Champions League knockout matches.

Rodri’s potential new deal is also a major talking point. Matching him with Haaland’s wage packet would send a clear message that City intend to keep their core intact. For fans, this combination of youth and experience is exactly what is needed to continue their dominance. If Gundogan leaves on a free next summer, it will be with the blessing of supporters who will appreciate one last year of his influence.
