Why Dessers Scores More Than Colak did… But Can’t Carry the Squad Alone!

Ibrox Noise was surprised in some senses, but also not surprised in many more, as a result of the recent poll we carried out over fan suitability for Cyriel Dessers and his role as the striker main choice, as promoted by Kris Boyd. The Nigerian striker has been marmite at Ibrox, chalk and cheese, very much an acquired taste, who Ibrox Noise has been behind ever since he signed.
We have endorsed the former Feyenoord striker. We actually quite like him, but fans very much did not en masse, like the hitman, who shall we say, isn’t the most clinical at times. Indeed Bambi on ice would be one way to describe his general physique perhaps, but he is a very hard worker and what cannot be denied is the goal haul, it’s pretty darn good. Indeed he was top scorer last season.
Suddenly, with that stat, a lot of fans now want him to be the main striker. They are actually of the ilk to support him. Now the curious thing is, this is the same player and indeed very much the same squad as wasn’t good enough last season, according to these same fans.
These same fans who raged after every match, telling every player how diabolical he was and of course back in the day, heavily defending manager Philippe Clement. Instead always blaming the players, they’re not working hard enough, they’re not good enough, this, that, the next thing.
Now suddenly, apparently some of them are good enough. Indeed even though Barry Ferguson, the interim coach at the end of last season, managed the worst ratio of results of 30% with these same players that Rangers have ever had in our entire history, nevertheless suddenly some of these players are good enough.
Doesn’t make an awful lot of sense. This is why fan opinion is often very inconsistent and not overly reliable. If fans are saying one minute that a player is garbage, then the next minute 75% are all endorsing him. It doesn’t really add up. It does show why the fan opinion isn’t always entirely trustworthy. So is Dessers actually good enough? Well we’ll give a go at that one in the next part.
For our money, Dessers is a less clinical Antonio Colak. Colak was a clinical striker, a really great striker who was on fire and at the time only Manchester City’s Norwegian superstar, I’m sure you know who we’re talking about, was scoring at the same level, okay admittedly in a stronger league, but both of them were scoring every single match.
Colak’s numbers were superb and he was extremely clinical. Dessers has scored more than he did, however there’s no question that Dessers doesn’t have the same class perhaps, the same clinical edge, the same composure, even though he gets more goals he misses many many more. Do we think he’s good enough to be Rangers main striker?
We think he’s good enough to be one of them. We think the problem with Dessers is he’s not good in the air, he doesn’t really hold up play that well and he’s not particularly strong. Think Daniel Cousin, he was a great striker, a target man up front who could take the ball, wrap it up and hold play up. He was outstanding against Barcelona in that very vein.
Dessers can’t do that even against lesser teams. We do need somebody else as well. We do like Dessers but we wouldn’t, unlike Boyd and unlike the majority of fans, build the entire team around him and we have been his biggest defender since the start. He’s been with Rangers for two seasons now and we’ve always backed him but we don’t see him as polished enough to deliver overall what we need at every single level but he is certainly a very very good option to have. So no, we wouldn’t build around him but we would very much make him a strong part of the team.
