According to journalist Roberto Morales, the power dynamic between Vinicius Jr. and Real Madrid has shifted dramatically in recent months.
Just weeks ago, it seemed that the Brazilian’s contract renewal was on the right track. Now, negotiations have completely stalled due to a significant gap between what Vinicius’s agents are demanding and what the club is willing to offer.
Speaking on COPE (h/t SPORT), Morales explained how the situation unfolded. “When Vinicius felt he was close to winning the Ballon d’Or, he took charge of his renewal,” Morales said.
“He wanted to set the terms and asked to earn as much—or even more—than Mbappe.”
However, things have changed since then. Vinicius did not have the standout season many expected.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe arrived at Real Madrid and quickly became the team’s centrepiece. This has forced the club to rethink its approach to Vinicius’s contract.
“Real Madrid see things differently now,” Morales explained. “The club is the one setting the conditions, the timelines, and the terms. They’re in control of the negotiations, not the player.”

Morales also pointed out that Vinicius’s situation today is very different from what it was two years ago.
Back then, a potential exit for the Brazilian would have caused shockwaves. Now, the idea of selling him is no longer considered a disaster.
“Vinicius leaving is not as dramatic as it would have been before,” Morales stated. “In fact, a transfer at this point wouldn’t break anything at Real Madrid.”
The club believes it is not the right moment to shatter their carefully managed salary structure for any player, even one as talented as Vinicius.
The winger’s performances last season were not at the level required to justify a record-breaking salary, and the board is standing firm on this principle.
For now, the ball is in Vinicius’s court. Either he accepts the club’s terms, or he risks facing an uncertain future, possibly away from the Bernabeu.
