Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be appointed as the new head coach of Besiktas.
Solskjaer has been out of work since being sacked as Manchester United manager in November 2021. The Norwegian has taken a patient approach to a managerial return but has now agreed a deal to head to Besiktas.
Solskjaer will take over the Turkish Süper Lig side, who have endured a disappointing start to the campaign. The Istanbul outfit are sixth in the table and trail runaway leaders Galatasaray by 20 points.
Besiktas sacked head coach Giovani van Bronckhorst in November with Serdar Topraktepe placed in interim charge. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Solskjaer is now set to sign an 18-month deal with the club.
Solskjaer’s arrival in Istanbul will see the 51-year-old go head-to-head with another former Manchester United manager. Jose Mourinho, who Solskjaer replaced at Old Trafford in 2018, is currently in charge of fierce Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce.
He will inherit a squad that contains several faces familiar to Premier League fans. Former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and ex-Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista are part of the current set-up. Ciro Immobile, Lazio’s record scorer, is also at the Tüpraş Stadium.
