The 51-year-old has been away from management since November 2021 when he was sacked by Man Utd following a poor run of form.

Prior to his appointment by United, Solskjaer had two spells in charge of Molde and also had a brief period with Cardiff City.

At Old Trafford, he initially replaced Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December 2018, before signing a three-year contract in March 2019 after steering the ship.

During his time at Man Utd, the Norwegian guided the club to a second-place Premier League finish and an Europa League final but left the club without winning a trophy.

Now, Solskjaer is being lined up by Besiktas, who currently sit in the Turkish Super Lig, to fill the managerial vacancy after parting ways with ex-Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona man Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November.

"Our company has started negotiations with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the position of Football A team technical director," the club said in a statement.

If appointed, a battle between Solskjaer and Mourinho will loom as Besiktas are scheduled to face Fenerbahce away from home at the beginning of May in a fixture that could be crucial for both teams.

Besiktas may still be in the hunt for European qualification, whilst Fenerbahce might have closed the gap on league leaders Galatasaray.

Furthermore, a return to Old Trafford could be on the cards for Solskjaer.

Though, a potential reunion is largely dependent on Besiktas as they've got work to do to avoid elimination from the Europa League at the group stage.

As things currently stand, they're 28th in the table but just a point off the play-off spots with two games remaining.
