Although the 2024/25 campaign was a vast improvement for the Owls on the surface, controversy and speculation have swirled around Hillsborough on an almost non-stop basis.

From managerial uncertainty to missed payments and disgruntled fans, there hasn’t been a dull moment for the Owls this term.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding Sheffield Wednesday during this hectic time of the year…

EFL issue Dejphon Chansiri warning

Not for the first time, Sheffield Wednesday players, coaching staff and individuals behind the scenes were left without full payment come the end of May.

Journalist Rob Staton revealed that players and staff had not been paid, in what was a repeat of an incident from March, in which payment was delayed until April 8 due to Dejphon Chansiri's personal cash flow issues.

Now, the EFL have commented on the situation, after it was revealed that Chansiri still hasn't paid the club's staff, and is instead reaching out to people outside of the club to try and help raise the funds needed to pay his members of staff, according to The Star.

As per Staton, an EFL spokesperson said: “The situation is clearly concerning for all those directly affected. In respect of any action to be taken against the Club, the League is now considering all the options available in accordance with its Regulations.”

This has naturally added fuel to the Wednesday supporters’ already existing distaste for their owner, who are desperate for the club to be taken forward under alternative stewardship.

Second bid rejected from American consortium

It was reported by the Star in April that the Owls had been subject to a takeover bid from an American consortium, believed to be in connection with Adam Shaw, a Sheffield-raised businessman now living in the States.

A club spokesman told them: "We can confirm an expression of interest was received from USA-based investors, working together with a previous sponsor of the club. No proof of funds was presented, nor the identity of the investors, and the offer was derisory."

The Star reported that a second bid from the same consortium had been rejected in late May, which will only add to Wednesday fans’ frustration.

Danny Rohl's future still unclear

Danny Röhl's time at Hillsborough has been virtually over since the end of the season.

One of Röhl's rumoured destinations were ruled out after Southampton decided to appoint Will Still as their new boss.

Rob Staton reported that Bundesliga side Werder Bremen had inquired about the 36-year-old’s services but were put off by Röhl's release clause.

It seems inevitable that a new manager will be in the home dugout at Hillsborough next term, but the longer this saga drags on, the more it negatively affects both Wednesday and Röhl's preparation for the 2025/26 campaign.

Swansea City are also in the race for the 29-year-old’s services, who spent five years at the Toughsheet Community Stadium before this summer.

Santos was stripped of his former club’s captaincy by Ian Evatt last term but now looks to be stepping up a division for the 2025/26 campaign.

The centre-half would be expected to play a rotational role at his new club, whether that be at Hillsborough or in Swansea.
