Sheffield United & Sheffield Wednesday fans will head into the new season in different states of mind. Here's how their season ticket prices compare.
Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday will be embarking on the 2025/26 season in very different states of mind, with United looking to set straight the pain caused by their play-off final defeat against Sunderland and Wednesday uncertain about their future after an end to the season which has descended into a bit of a mess.
Season ticket sales are an important revenue generator for clubs in the Championship, especially those who aren't in receipt of Premier League parachute payments.
Having only been relegated at the end of the 2023/24 season, Sheffield United are still in receipt of these payments, although the amount that they will receive will be lower for the 2025/26 season. Sheffield Wednesday, however, are among the majority of clubs who don't receive them, so start the season at a disadvantage to those who do.
Sheffield United released their season ticket prices for the 2025/26 season in the middle of March. These prices were early bird prices that were to be held until the 2nd May, with the aim of the club being to ensure that there's money coming in before the start of summer transfer activity.
The early bird price for the cheapest season ticket at Bramall Lane for next season was set at £426. This has since increased to £514.50, but the club will have been expecting fans to take advantage of the offer that was available until the start of May.
Figures from the Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday websites.
Sheffield Wednesday arrange their season ticket sales in a slightly different way, with the prices having been released earlier and then increasing throughout the second half of the season.
The original cheapest baseline price was £460, but this was only available from December through to January. Now that all early bird offers have ended, the cheapest season ticket price at Hillsborough is now £576, compared to £560 for the 2024/25 season, with The Yorkshire Post identifying them as the second most expensive in the Championship.
Wednesday have long been criticised over the cost of their season tickets. That seems all the more pointed this year, given the uncertainty over the club's future direction caused by the unclear status over whether Danny Rohl will still be in his position by the start of next season and issues relating to paying wages on time, which have resulted in charges from the EFL.
These issues have cast a cloud over Hillsborough that likely won't be lifted by the start of the 2025/26 season. Sheffield United fans may have been very disappointed at not getting back to the Premier League at the end of the 2024/25 season, but United's issues are nothing like those facing their cross-city rivals at present.
