Fabrizio Romano has just given his famous “here we go” to the Noni Madueke to Arsenal move, signalling as complete a transfer which has really moved quickly in the last few days.
The Gunners have been chasing the winger for a while, but the last week has seen a flurry of activity, with the contract terms allegedly agreed over the weekend and the last few days spent finalising the terms of the transfer fee.
Fabrizio Romano’s Tweet about Noni Madueke moving to Arsenal.
According to Romano, Madueke leaves for a fee which is in excess of £50m with add-ons included. He later added that it was £52m all told. The winger – who was in the Tottenham youth academy, will sign a five year contract with their North London rivals.
He leaves Chelsea with a mixed legacy – he certainly improved in his 2.5 years at the club, but there are many who doubt he can go up another level, and the club have pretty much proved they feel the same way by cashing in.
He becomes the latest in a long stream of Chelsea players who have headed to the Emirates. Not many of those deals have proved to be bad ones for the Blues.
Madueke’s departure is one that’s going to be pretty divisive, and one we won’t get to the bottom of for a while. There’s even some debate about whether selling Kai Havertz was a good move, and that was a couple of years ago.
We can see Madueke developing further, scoring consistently and making £50m look cheap. We can also see him struggling for minutes, falling out of favour and getting into difficulty.
It will take some time before we know who got the better of this deal – but there certainly aren’t many Chelsea fans complaining right now.
