With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool future remains uncertain — and, according to journalist David Lynch, it may hinge on a familiar Premier League name.
The Italian forward endured a frustrating debut season at Anfield, making just 14 appearances under Arne Slot and failing to feature in Sunday’s Community Shield despite a subdued showing from Mohamed Salah. Lynch wrote:
“A return to Italy has long been touted as the likeliest outcome for Federico Chiesa this summer after a disappointing debut season at Anfield. That remains the case, though the chances of the Reds securing a permanent deal feel as if they are shrinking the closer the deadline gets.”
One potential route out for Chiesa lies with Atalanta, who Lynch reports could “be armed with sufficient funds to cut a deal” should they offload former Everton forward Ademola Lookman. That would require a sizeable offer, with the Serie A club reportedly seeking €50m (£43.2m).

If Lookman leaves, Atalanta may push for a permanent Chiesa move. If not, a loan appears the more likely outcome, with Slot seemingly unconvinced by the 27-year-old’s role in his plans.
The decision not to introduce Chiesa at Wembley — even with penalties looming — suggests his first-team prospects are bleak. It’s a surprising stance, given Chiesa’s undoubted quality and the affection many Kopites have for him.
His Liverpool career has mirrored the difficult end to his Juventus spell, plagued by injury setbacks and limited opportunities. As Lynch highlights, the winger may need “to take a step back first in order to take one forward later”.
A loan move could reignite Chiesa’s form, keep him on Liverpool’s books, and potentially increase his market value. Permanently selling now, especially under current circumstances, might not serve the Reds’ best interests.
From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, the Chiesa situation is bittersweet. On one hand, it’s hard to ignore that he has not been integrated into Slot’s system and hasn’t delivered the impact many hoped for after his arrival. On the other hand, letting him go permanently feels premature — especially when the squad could benefit from depth across the attacking line.
The Lookman factor adds an intriguing twist. Liverpool supporters know how unpredictable transfer chain reactions can be, and this one depends on whether Atalanta find a buyer for their Europa League final hero. If that domino falls, a sale could make financial sense — but only if Liverpool are convinced Chiesa’s future lies elsewhere.
For now, the hope will be that Chiesa’s Liverpool story isn’t over. The raw pace, the vision, and the goal threat are still there. It might just take the right environment — and a bit of luck — for the Kop to see the best of him.
