With Liverpool entering the new campaign as defending Premier League champions, Arne Slot begins his second season in the dugout with momentum, belief, and a squad evolving into his image. Last summer’s transition from Jürgen Klopp’s chaos-pressing to Slot’s composed, possession-based blueprint was ambitious; now, it’s battle-tested. The result? A title secured and a team still hungry for more.
While the summer has already seen the arrivals of Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, rumours persist that Alexander Isak and Marc Guéhi could yet be added to the champions’ armoury. Should that happen, Liverpool would boast both the depth and quality to make a serious attempt at consecutive titles — something no Liverpool side has achieved since the 1980s.
With the curtain-raiser at Anfield looming, here’s how I see the season unfolding.
1 – Liverpool FC
2 – Manchester City
3 – Arsenal
4 – Chelsea
5 – Aston Villa
6 – Tottenham Hotspur
7 – Manchester United
8 – West Ham United
9 – Newcastle United
10 – Crystal Palace
11 – Nottingham Forest
12 – Brighton
13 – Fulham
14 – Bournemouth
15 – Everton
16 – Ipswich Town
17 – Brentford
18 – Burnley
19 – Leeds
20 – Sunderland
Chelsea may again flatter to deceive — promising moments followed by managerial uncertainty — while Manchester United’s stasis remains the most predictable thing in football. Arsenal, as ever, should compete for much of the season before fading when silverware beckons. Manchester City’s ongoing legal cloud could provide enough turbulence to give Liverpool the edge again. However, the champions will still have to earn every point in a league that looks stronger from top to bottom. For my beliefs and propaganda, I have included Alexander Isak as a red in the hope that he lands at his chosen destination.
1 – Mohamed Salah – 25+ goals
2 – Alexander Isak* – 25+ goals
3 – Erling Haaland – 25 goals
4 – Viktor Gyökeres – 20 goals
5 – Cole Palmer – 20 goals
If Isak arrives, he could push Haaland closer than most, however, Salah, now equally a creator-finisher hybrid, may well top the charts once again and deliver massive goal involvements across the board with so much talent around him.
1 – Mohamed Salah – 30+ goals
2 – Alexander Isak* – 25+ goals
3 – Hugo Ekitike – 20+ goals
4 – Florian Wirtz – 15+ goals
5 – Cody Gakpo – 15 goals
Slot’s structured attacking play will give Liverpool’s forwards cleaner chances and better spacing. If Isak joins, expect him to thrive as the spearhead while Salah and Gakpo continue to chip in heavily. Szoboszlai remains a threat from both open play and set pieces, whereas Florian Wirtz is sensational and could well steal the show.
1 – Florian Wirtz
2 – Mohamed Salah
3 – Virgil van Dijk
4 – Alexander Isak*
5 – Alexis Mac Allister
(*if signed)
Salah will again drive Liverpool’s success, Van Dijk remains the defensive leader, and Szoboszlai’s influence will grow in year two. Frimpong could prove one of the signings of the season with his attacking thrust from right-back.
1 – Florian Wirtz
2 – Mohamed Salah
3 – Rodri
4 – Alexander Isak*
5 – Declan Rice
The difference between silver and nothing could come down to individual brilliance. Liverpool’s number 11 remains among the league’s most decisive players, and if Isak joins and hits form early, he could be right there in the conversation.
Rio Ngumoha – The 16-year-old midfielder’s maturity, vision, and technical skill could make him an early-season surprise in Slot’s rotation. While Liverpool’s attack is almost restocked, Rio’s ability to operate as an impact substitute means he could earn meaningful minutes in both domestic cups and the league.
FA Cup – Semi-finals
EFL Cup – Quarter-finals
Slot is unlikely to deviate from last year’s pragmatic approach — blooding youngsters and giving fringe players time while keeping key legs fresh for the league and Europe. There must be more use of the squad and the integration of players will only safeguard form and fitness at the back end of the season.
Prediction: Final
Liverpool fell short in Europe last season, but with a year’s experience under Slot’s tactical structure, they’re better placed to manage the knockout rounds. A return to the final is realistic, and if the domestic title is within reach, it could come down to which competition they prioritise in the spring.
Liverpool enters 2025/26 with the rare challenge of defending a title while still building towards their peak. Slot has reshaped the squad without losing its competitive edge, and if the rumoured signings materialise, this could be a season that cements the Dutchman’s reign at Anfield as a golden era in the making.
