Chelsea’s ongoing evolution under Enzo Maresca continues to highlight the need for reinforcements, particularly in attack. With reports from Caught Offside indicating that Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma is a key summer target, the question is whether an €80m move for the Japanese winger would provide the spark the Blues have been missing.
Mitoma has been one of Brighton’s standout players since his arrival, earning plaudits for his electrifying dribbling, creativity, and goal-scoring ability. His recent performance against Chelsea, in which he scored and tormented the defence throughout, was a clear reminder of his quality.
Jamie Carragher’s description of his goal as “Messi-like” was not an exaggeration. Mitoma’s balance, quick feet, and composure in front of goal make him one of the most dangerous wingers in the Premier League.
Brighton, however, are understandably reluctant to let him go. Reports suggest they have already turned down a €90m bid in the past and are currently negotiating a contract extension until 2029. That said, should Chelsea present an €80m offer, it could test Brighton’s resolve.
For all their investment in young talent, Chelsea remain inconsistent in the final third. Their attack has struggled for fluency, often relying on individual brilliance rather than a cohesive system. Mitoma, with his ability to break down deep-lying defences, would add a different dimension.

Crucially, his arrival would also fit the club’s broader strategy of signing players in their prime rather than relying solely on raw prospects. At 27, Mitoma brings experience but still has several peak years ahead of him.
Chelsea are not the only club monitoring Mitoma’s future. Reports suggest Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr could make a substantial offer, which may appeal to Brighton given their history of securing maximum value for departing players.
Ultimately, while Chelsea’s interest appears strong, the player’s ambitions and Brighton’s asking price will determine whether this move materialises. If Maresca sees Mitoma as a key piece in his attacking rebuild, Chelsea may be prepared to meet Brighton’s demands.
The potential signing of Mitoma is an enticing prospect. The Blues have spent heavily in recent transfer windows, but many of their young signings are still adapting to the demands of the Premier League. Mitoma, on the other hand, is a proven performer in English football and would provide an immediate impact.
His dribbling ability is among the best in the league, and his composure in front of goal would be a welcome addition to a Chelsea side that has lacked clinical finishing. Having someone capable of unlocking defences with a moment of magic could be transformative for Maresca’s system.
There is, of course, some concern about the price tag. €80m is a substantial fee for a 27-year-old, especially given Brighton’s negotiating strength. However, Chelsea have previously spent similar sums on less proven talent. In that context, securing a player of Mitoma’s ability could represent a calculated gamble rather than a reckless splurge.
Furthermore, keeping him away from Saudi Arabia or a Premier League rival would be a statement of intent. If Chelsea are serious about closing the gap to the top sides, signing a player of Mitoma’s calibre could be a significant step in the right direction.
