Premier League clubs have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of Lille forward Jonathan David.
David’s contract at Lille is due to expire this month and the Canadian forward is one of Europe’s most coveted free agents.
The 25-year-old had been expected to sign for Napoli on a free transfer but a change of stance from the Italian champions has re-opened the race.
Napoli are pushing to sign Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese as a new forward. Sky Italia have claimed that a contract has already been agreed and the clubs will meet with to agree on a transfer fee. Napoli have also held discussions for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.
The cooling of interest from the Serie A side has opened the door for Premier League teams in the race for David.
West Ham United are understood to have submitted a contract offer to the player, while Manchester United, Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have all been linked.
There’s significant competition from across Europe, however, with Juventus, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray all keen.
David has scored 109 goals in 232 games for Lille and netted 25 times in all competitions last season. He is also Canada’s record goalscorer with 34 goals for the national team.
Earlier this year, the forward told the It’s Called Soccer! Podcast that he is confident he can adapt to any league.
David said: “To be honest, I think I can adapt to every League. Every league has their differences. I think the Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than all the other leagues.
“But I grew up watching a lot of La Liga. I wouldn’t say that would be my preferred league, but I think that’s a league that I enjoyed watching the most. I think one day, I would like to play there. But will that happen? I don’t know. I’m not opposed to anything, and we’ll just see where the future takes us.”
