Amid all the acts of self-contrition over the Thomas Müller situation, current FC Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has one defender in the form of former FCB executive Oliver Kahn. The former Bayern keeper definitely knows something about the stressors associated with working in the Bayern front office. Kahn – in an interview with Bild and quoted by transfermarkt – spoke on the continuing sticky influence Eberl’s bosses and the sticky influence of the supposedly retired Uli Hoeneß.
Kahn and former Bayern board member for sport Hasan Salihamidzic were both sacked after a very short time by Bayern’s chief personnel executives. The pair had been patiently awaiting their time behind bosses Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. Hoeneß nevertheless didn’t keep away from the club, famously disapproving of Kahn and Salihamidzic’s decision to sack Julian Nagelsmann and install Thomas Tuchel in March 2023.
Hoeneß famously visited the Säbener Straße training ground to berate Tuchel in person. Bayern clinching the 2022/23 Bundesliga title on the final day of the season wasn’t enough to save Kahn and Salihamidzic. A decision had been made before kickoff. Both were officially axed shortly after the full-time whistle. Rummenigge and Hoeneß returned to the front office that summer to work with Tuchel.
“In the past, it’s not been a good sign when other names were being floated,” Kahn said of the rumors that the supervisory board might be planning on procuring a replacement for Eberl. “One expects a certain amount of support. At some point, there has to be a certain amount of trust. The fact that speculation is now cropping up again certainly doesn’t make Max Eberl’s work any easier and weakens his position.”
