Newcastle have actually won four of their last five meetings with Manchester United, having only claimed victory from four of their previous 41 encounters.
The Magpies are aiming for a third successive home win over the Red Devils for the first time in 55 years, seeking to complete a first league-double over Man United since 1930/31.
These two Uniteds are 15 points apart in the Premier League table, but not the way round it's been in the past, and this is a crucial clash for the northernmost of the duo. It's already been an historic season for Newcastle United, ending their 70-year wait for domestic silverware, but it could get a whole lot better, given that they're in the hunt for Champions League qualification.
Last time out, on Monday night, the Magpies swatted aside an admittedly hopeless Leicester 3-0 at the King Power, all the goals coming in the first 35 minutes. Jacob Murphy broke the deadlock inside 100 seconds, before slotting home a third, after Fabian Schär very nearly scored from inside his own half, with Harvey Barnes completing the rout. That made it three wins on the spin for Eddie Howe's team, lifting them up to fifth, thereby occupying the final Champions League position. With in-form Palace visiting Tyneside on Wednesday, before a crucial visit to Villa Park next Saturday evening, this could be a season-defining week for the Toon Army, firm favourites to start it with a win.
Manchester United meantime are primarily focused on the Europa League although, if they are going to win that competition, it certainly won't be easy. On Thursday night, the Red Devils held Olympique Lyonnais to a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final on a thoroughly entertaining evening in France. André Onana's latest howler gifted les Gones the lead from a free-kick, only for Leny Yoro to head home an equaliser right at the end of first half stoppage time. Then, with two minutes to play, Joshua Zirkzee had seemingly snatched a crucial victory for Man United, only for another Onana error to allow Lyon to equalise right a the death. 2-2 it finished in Décines-Charpieu, meaning it's all to play for at Old Trafford next Thursday.
Meantime, in the Premier League, following last Sunday's diabolically boring Manchester derby, that ended goalless, Rúben Amorim's team remain 13th, yet to win back-to-back games all season, only beating Ipswich and Leicester across their last eight. Thus, it would actually be a major shock of Man United departed Tyneside with a positive result on Sunday.
Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Lewis Hall all remain sidelined, while Joe Willock is out too following a concussion against Brentford. Meantime, Anthony Gordon suffering severe bruising to his leg on international duty, making him a doubt, although he could be back on the bench.
Kieran Trippier and Alexander Isak were both doubts ahead of the trip to Leicester, but both started, before being taken off when the match was won, which was an added bonus for Eddie Howe. Lastly, Joelinton will sit out those aforementioned crucial games against Palace and Villa if cautioned.
Newcastle United predicted lineup vs Manchester United: (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Livramento; Tonali, Guimarães, Joelinton; Murphy, Barnes, Isak.
Alexander Isak has 24 goals to his name this season, although he's only ever found the net once in seven previous meetings with Man United, this coming at Old Trafford in December.
It'll be interesting to see how Rúben Amorim approaches this fixtures, with the second leg against Lyon in mind. In a major boost, Kobbie Mainoo came off the bench on Thursday, his first appearance since 7 February due to a muscle injury, likely to see some more action here.
Nevertheless, with Lisandro Martínez, Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven, Jonny Evans and Amad still sidelined, Amorim has little scope for mass-rotation. If he does want to save players for the Europa League, Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount and mid-week scorer Joshua Zirkzee are amongst those who could come in.
Manchester United predicted lineup vs Newcastle United: (3-4-2-1): Onana; Yoro, Maguire, Mazraoui; Dalot, Ugarte, Casemiro, Dorgu; Garnacho, Fernandes, Zirkzee.
Bruno Fernandes has 16 goals to his name this season, while he has previously scored three times against Newcastle, and once again he'll be Man United's talisman.
As alluded to throughout, we are confidently forecasting a Newcastle win. In short, we'd be shocked if Man United were not beaten at St James' Park: Newcastle United 2-0 Manchester United.
