When Wimbledon is mentioned in connection with Newcastle United, fair to say that it is more likely to be Vinnie Jones and the Crazy Gang that will come to mind, rather than the more genteel happenings each July in SW19.

However, Newcastle United fan Cameron Norrie is doing his best to change that.

Back in 2022, the Newcastle United hierarchy invited (see below) the NUFC supporter to St James’ Park after he reached the Wimbledon semi-finals, only to lose to Djokovic in the last four.

Now aged 29, Cameron Norrie could be heading into another Wimbledon semi-final.

Back in 2022, Norrie reached number eight in the world following his Wimbledon exertions that summer but this past year has been tough for the Newcastle United fan, who went into this year’s Wimbledon ranked number 61 in the world, meaning he was unseeded for the tournament.

Despite this, Cameron Norrie has shown real character and fought all his way through to a last 16 clash today, against 6ft 7 giant Nicolas Jarry of Chile.

An epic match went all the way to five sets and Cameron Norrie winning, with the massive bonus of not dropping a single game on his serve during the match.

To reach the Wimbledon semi-finals this week, another tough ask for the Newcastle United fan.

Cameron Norrie looks set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals, the Spaniard is hot favourite to beat number 14 seed Andrey Rublev on Sunday night.

Cameron Norrie received an invitation from the Newcastle United owners via Mehrdad Ghodoussi – July 2022:

Cameron Norrie has an interesting background, born to British (Scottish and Welsh) parents in South Africa, moving to New Zealand at the age of three, university in the United States, then eventually settling in London as his tennis career took off.

Cameron Norrie when asked to list his interests (see official LTA site below for example) always lists Newcastle United,  as well as South Sydney Rabbitohs (rugby league) and All Blacks (rugby union) as the teams he supports in other sports.

From the official LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) site:

QUICK-FIRE FACTS

Favourite tournament: Wimbledon

Tennis idols: Andre Agassi and Rafa Nadal

If he wasn’t a tennis player he’d work in real estate. Family: Father is called David (who is Scottish) and mother is called Helen (who is Welsh). Both were born in Great Britain and played squash to university level before moving to New Zealand. His sister is called Bronwen.
