Three wins in the final three games at home to Wolfsburg, away to Leverkusen and at home to Kiel should be enough to take the team into the Champions League. That was the message from sporting director Sebastian Kehl after a deserved victory in a turbulent game at TSG Hoffenheim: “If we win all three games, we have a great chance of playing in the Champions League next season.”

To do so, the Black and Yellows must secure at least one point more than Leipzig (remaining fixtures: Bayern Munich at home, Bremen away, Stuttgart at home) and three points more than Freiburg (remaining fixtures: Leverkusen at home, Kiel away, Frankfurt at home).

In Sinsheim, Borussia Dortmund took the lead twice, first through Serhou Guirassy after an assist from Daniel Svensson in the 20th minute, then through Julian Brandt with a spectacular, technically-demanding shot after a cross from Svensson in the 74th minute. In between, the Black and Yellows missed several clear-cut chances, including a penalty (Guirassy) and a one-on-one (Gittens), both set up by the impressive Brandt, who had also orchestrated the opening goal. However, the equaliser to make it 1-1, scored by Adam Hlozek in the 61st minute, and the goal for 2-2, scored by Pavel Kaderabek in stoppage time, were given away too easily.

“We made life difficult for ourselves with the equaliser in the 90th minute,” said Waldemar Anton, who then scored the winning goal to make it 3-2: ‘But the way we continued to believe in ourselves and turned the game around speaks for itself. In the end, it comes down to who wants it most. And this time round, it was us!" The defender then added: ”We've worked hard for this over the past few weeks. We've developed a different mentality.”

It's interesting to take a look at the running statistics: Borussia covered 123.84 kilometers in Kraichgau, slightly less than their opponents (124.55), but more than the league's most prolific runners (Holstein Kiel) have averaged this season: 119.67 km. In the last five games, Borussia (609 km) have even covered a total of 13 kilometres more than the “running monsters” from Kiel (596).
