The Etihad Stadium number one Ederson is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, according to Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel.

The Brazil international is undergoing yet another campaign at the home of the reigning Premier League champions despite a summer of uncertainty regarding his future at the top of the club game.

Ederson was at the centre of intense transfer speculation linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia, as a number of clubs entered into a period of negotiation with Etihad Stadium transfer bosses over the player’s signature.

Ultimately, and having seen Manchester City stand firm on a £50 million valuation of the player, no such transfer would come to fruition for Ederson to the Middle-East, and the goalkeeper has once again adopted his status as the club’s number one choice.

Speaking in a new edition of The Overlap, Manchester United legend and former Manchester City shot-stopper Peter Schmeichel has explained why he believes Ederson is currently the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

“Ederson is fantastic in terms of making big saves and 1v1 situations. Alisson struggles a bit with his feet. There are a few mistakes that he would make that you don’t see from Ederson. That’s the only thing [separating them],” Schmeichel explained.

He continued, “Ederson is the best keeper in the Premier League. David Raya is coming close now too. He has really impressed me.

“Once he got established as Arsenal’s number one and that competition situation got out of the way and Aaron Ramsdale left, there was a different aura around him. He’s played well and has kept his team in a few games.”

Losing Ederson in the summer would have been a huge blow to Pep Guardiola’s tactical operation at Manchester City, with the Brazilian playing an integral role in the team’s build-up play since his arrival in the summer of 2017.

Stefan Ortega Moreno is understood to have been lined up as the successor to Ederson as Manchester City’s number one in the event of a departure in the summer, whilst Werder Bremen’s Michael Zetterer could have been brought in as a new back-up choice.
