Barcelona’s quest to secure Dani Olmo’s signature has taken an exciting turn, as journalist Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Manchester City are no longer in the running to sign the RB Leipzig and Spain forward.

Olmo has emerged as one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market this summer and his outstanding performances in the ongoing European Championship have further increased his appeal.

Currently, Olmo’s contract includes a €60 million release clause, which was recently extended from July 15 to July 20.

Jacobs reports that Barcelona have already initiated discussions about signing Olmo. In fact, they engaged in direct talks with Leipzig before Euro 2024, but the deal would require a flexible payment plan to move forward.

Not easy for Barcelona to compete for Olmo

Amidst Barcelona’s interest, it must be noted that Bayern Munich and Manchester United are also in the race.

The two teams believe the release clause will not significantly impact Leipzig’s willingness to negotiate. Even if the clause expires, Leipzig are expected to remain open to offers on similar terms.

Barcelona’s interest in Olmo is well-known, but Nico currently tops their priority list. Moreover, securing Olmo won’t be straightforward since he doesn’t have a preferred destination, unlike Nico.

Recent reports suggest Bayern are leading the race to sign the Spanish forward as after losing their Bundesliga crown to Bayer Leverkusen last season, they are determined to reclaim their title and see Olmo as a crucial part of their rebuilding efforts.

Considering their focus on Nico, it is fair to speculate that Barcelona might decide to pass up on the opportunity to sign Olmo.

They are aware of their financial constraints and the tough competition from top clubs. With Bayern Munich and Manchester United also in the mix, Barcelona understand that acquiring Olmo would be a significant financial undertaking.
