Lisandro Martinez reportedly tore his cruciate knee ligament in Manchester United’s 2-0 Premier League loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Martinez has played a pivotal role for the Red Devils, especially over the last month.
He has provided much-needed defensive assurance and made pivotal contributions at the other end of the pitch.
He was back to his best with his line-breaking passes.
The Argentine opened the scoring against Liverpool, playing a crucial role in winning a point at Anfield.
The defender delivered a sublime cross for Bruno Fernandes to net the 92nd-minute winner in the 2-1 victory over Rangers.
He also scored the only goal against Fulham to win three points for his side.
Manager Ruben Amorim has to think of solutions to ensure that United do not miss Martinez.
Luke Shaw, with his technical prowess and silky left foot, seems the perfect candidate to step into the role.
The England international has had bad luck with injuries. He has barely played any football lately, featuring only three times off the bench this season.
His last start came for England in the final of the European Championship against Spain in July.
He could have been one of the best full-backs of his generation, but fitness issues have held him back.
A large section of United fans have already lost patience with the defender.
However, Martinez’s injury has given Shaw an opportunity to win over the supporters and secure a future at the club.
Amorim has labelled Shaw as ‘very important‘ to the team. He needs to live up to that description.
