La Liga president Javier Tebas has said that Barcelona, amidst their financial challenges, find this year the most manageable in meeting the league’s financial regulations and recruiting new players.

This is in contrast to the past two years when most new signings were facilitated through various financial manoeuvres.

Tebas made these comments during his appearance at the ‘Sports Summit Mexico 2024’. He delivered a presentation titled ‘Global Expansion of La Liga’ and commended Barcelona for their efforts in reducing the salaries of their first-team players.

The optimism within FC Barcelona’s leadership regarding potential signings this summer has received strong support from Tebas.

According to the La Liga president, the club is effectively handling its finances.

“This year, out of all the previous years, is the most favourable for Barcelona. They understand what needs to be done to bring in new players, they are well-versed in financial fair play,” said Tebas as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

“They are gradually recovering from their economic challenges, and we will see if they can address the remaining issues to make the significant signings they are aiming for.”

Tebas highlighted the board’s commendable efforts to expand their wage margin, which has been the primary barrier for the club in adding new players.

According to him, in 2021, Barcelona’s first-team wage bill stood at €650 million. Over the span of just three years, this figure has been reduced significantly by €200 million, showcasing substantial progress.

“There is a crucial point to note. Three years ago, Barcelona had a first-team salary budget of €650 million, which has now decreased to €450 million, a reduction of €20 million.

“This puts them in a more sustainable position for a club like Barcelona. They are now on par with Real Madrid in terms of salaries, but Real Madrid has been managing their finances effectively for years, allowing them to make new signings,” he explained.

If Barcelona continue to work on this path, they will finally be able to register those who are yet to be registered. Moreover, they would also have a relatively free hand in the transfer market and could eventually go for signing Nico Williams.
