Ethan Williams Makes Dream Start on Man United Tour

Unexpected call leads to unforgettable night

There are moments in football that seem almost scripted – the local lad, a late call-up, and a goal that reverberates beyond the pitch. Ethan Williams, the 19-year-old academy graduate, lived one of those rare moments in Chicago as he netted his first senior goal for Man United during a 4-1 pre-season victory over Bournemouth.

Having ended last season with a respectable loan spell at Cheltenham Town – scoring twice in 17 League Two appearances – Williams anticipated a quiet summer with the U21s. But Ruben Amorim’s decision to include him in Man United’s tour squad altered the course of his pre-season, and perhaps his career trajectory.

Moment of magic in Chicago

The winger’s night began modestly. He replaced Amad Diallo in the 70th minute. But what followed was a snapshot of raw talent and composure – a superb strike that sealed the win and sparked jubilant celebrations from the young Mancunian.

“It’s mad, I can’t believe it,” Williams said. “It still hasn’t really sunk in, to be honest. It’s a dream come true and I’m so happy right now.

“I’m thinking about all the moments, all the hard work I’ve been through. You know, I feel so blessed and so happy to be given this opportunity.

“To score, it’s mad. I can’t even explain how I am feeling, to be honest.”

Embracing opportunity with the senior squad

It was a stark contrast to just a week prior. Williams was initially told he wouldn’t be travelling with the senior side, having already sat out their pre-season opener against Leeds. Then came the call that flipped his summer upside down.

“It was last minute,” Williams told club media. “I was kind of told I wasn’t [going] and then I was.

“I remember just… not really jumping around the bedroom, but I was buzzing.”

Being thrust into a squad that includes international stars is a daunting task for any teenager, but Williams has embraced it with gratitude and determination.

“I’ve been trying to train well as these guys are the best players I’ve ever trained with, know what I mean? To be around it and be learning every single day is a real blessing and I’m just thankful for it all.”
