Real Madrid, a team that dominated football last season by defeating all opponents regardless of their stature, now finds themselves struggling in crucial encounters.
The squad has faltered against some of its fiercest rivals this season. In key matches, including the Madrid Derby, they have failed to secure wins, continuing a concerning trend of underperforming against top-tier opponents.
The reigning European and La Liga champions have yet to overcome teams like Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Club, Liverpool, or Milan in their title defence.
This pattern casts doubts over their ability to face Manchester City in the upcoming Champions League clash, though it also presents a chance to turn things around.
Madrid’s only notable triumph this season, aside from victories in the European Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup finals, was their impressive 5-2 comeback against Dortmund at the Bernabéu after facing significant pressure.
In other high-stakes matches, however, the team has struggled. Losses in two Clasicos have cost them the Spanish Super Cup and hampered their progress in La Liga.
Now, they are left to face a do-or-die Champions League tie against Manchester City, a formidable opponent despite their current slump.
Last season, Madrid showcased remarkable consistency, losing just two out of 55 matches. Both losses came against Atletico Madrid, with one occurring in extra time. Despite Atletico’s strong showings, they could not challenge Madrid for the championship.
This season, however, has been a different story. Simeone’s side and other top teams have proven resilient against Ancelotti’s men.
Even against less formidable sides, Madrid have shown signs of vulnerability, suffering unexpected defeats to Lille and Espanyol.
These setbacks have taken their toll. With seven losses in 38 games, Madrid have endured the added burden of extra Champions League matches. In the league, dropping five points in their last two matches has eroded their lead at the top of the table.
As they prepare to face Manchester City, Madrid must find a way to regain their competitive edge if they hope to salvage their season and compete for the top honours.
