Liverpool have confirmed the signing of French forward Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a transfer that could total to £79 million with the inclusion of add-ons.
Ekitike, previously of Paris Saint-Germain and Stade de Reims, has signed a six-year contract and will join his new team mates in Hong Kong this week.
This is another high-profile transfer for The Reds in a transformative summer which has seen the Premier League champions already bring in Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.
Their spending has now surpassed £250 million for this transfer window and could even increase amid speculation around Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo. This has been balanced by the sales of Caoimhín Kelleher, Jarell Quansah and the likely departure of Darwin Núñez.
Liverpool have had many prolific strikers such as Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush, but only Roberto Firmino has had major success since Luis Suárez, though not in the traditional manner, with the Brazilian acting more as a false nine than a target man.
The profile for the striker spot for Arne Slot was not very clear last season with a mixture of selections. The Frenchman’s attacking versatility and link-up play made him an attractive proposition.
Ekitike scored 22 goals and assisted 12 times in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2024/25 season but at 23 years-old, this was his first full season as the main striker.
Liverpool will play AC Milan on Saturday July 26 at the Kai Tak Sports Park where Ekitike could feature.
