In the early hours of Monday morning, Liverpool reached an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Alexander Isak in a British record transfer. The 25-year-old, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has been on strike throughout the summer in an effort to push through a move to Anfield, which will now happen before the transfer window closes.
News of an agreement for Isak to join has been celebrated by Liverpool fans, but it is also good news for Real Sociedad, who sold the Sweden international to Newcastle three years ago. As part of those negotiations, they retain a clause that would see them earn 10% of any capital gain that was received by the St James’ Park side.
Isak, who was seen training at La Real’s facilities during his strike period earlier in the summer, was signed for €70m in 2022, and as per Marca, the fee for his impending move to Liverpool is €150m. As a result, the Basque club will net a tidy pinch of €8m.

Earlier in the summer, Liverpool broke the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen as part of a deal worth in the region of €135m. But this will be broken by Isak, who will soon become the holder of that record – and this is something that can give satisfaction to those that unearthed him at La Real.
It remains to be seen whether La Real will put these extra funds, and any others that they have at their disposal, towards any new signings of their own before the summer transfer window closes at 8pm CEST. As the start of the new season has shown, Sergio Francisco’s squad certainly needs work, but it cannot be said for certain that anything will be done.
