In an interview with GQ Hype Spain, Pep Guardiola has revealed that he plans to take an indefinite break from football management once his time at Manchester City comes to an end. Although he hasn’t yet decided exactly when he’ll step down, the City boss made it clear that the decision to take a step back has already been made.
“I know that after this chapter with City, I will stop - I’m certain of it, it’s decided. More than decided,” Guardiola told the magazine. “How long I’ll stop for, I don’t know. A year, two years, three, five, ten, fifteen - I’ve no idea. But I do know that once this period at City ends, I need to stop and focus on myself, on my body.”
Guardiola, who is under contract with City until June 2027, compared the decision to the one he made at the end of his time at Barcelona in 2012. After an intense and hugely successful spell at the Camp Nou, he stepped away from football for a year before returning to the game with Bayern Munich.
“I think I stopped at the right time. It was the same during my time as coach at Barcelona. There came a moment where I said, ‘enough is enough’. I needed a new challenge,” he recalled.
Since taking charge at Manchester City in 2016, Guardiola has transformed the club, both in style and success. In his time at the Etihad, he’s won it all: six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, three Community Shields, a Champions League, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup.
Whatever comes next for Guardiola, his legacy in English football and at Manchester City is already firmly secured.
