Jonathan David has revealed that he held transfer talks with ‘a couple of teams’ in the summer but says a deal ‘just didn’t happen’.

David was linked with a number of teams in the summer window after entering the final season of his contract at Lille. The 24-year-old has been a prolific presence in Ligue 1 with 72 goals in 148 league appearances for the French side since arriving in 2020.

Chelsea are one of the teams to have held negotiations with David’s representatives in the most recent transfer window, while Manchester United, Newcastle, Spurs and West Ham were also linked.

David, who equalled Canada’s all-time goal record during their 2-1 friendly win over the USA this week, has opened up on his failure to secure a transfer.

“It just didn’t happen,” David told The Athletic after the win over the USA.

“There were a couple of offers and we just didn’t finish the deal, that’s it. I spoke to a couple of teams. I spoke with coaches. But ultimately made the decision to stay.”

David will be a free agent in 2025 and that status is sure to attract significant offers. However, the forward has not ruled out remaining at Lille and says a Premier League transfer is not his sole focus.

“Well, right now we’re speaking with the (Lille President Oliver Letang) about a possible extension. We’ll see how that goes.

“I’m open to anything. I think obviously the Premier League is regarded as one of the best league in the world. And for me it’s not the Premier League or bust. I’m open to anything and every league has its challenges.”
