Hugo Alba was the captain of the Barcelona Juvenil A team that won the treble under Juliano Belletti last season, making history.

However, the 19-year-old striker ended up leaving the Blaugrana as a free agent and is now a player for OFK Belgrade in Serbia.

Alba recently spoke to Jijantes FC in an interview, where he reflected on his time at Barcelona’s youth system and analysed his recent departure, which he attributed to a lack of opportunities.

Alba joined Barça’s academy in the 2021/2022 season from Elche, initially joining Juvenil B before progressing to Juvenil A, where his journey with the club concluded.

Over four seasons, the teenager played a total of 166 matches and scored an impressive 57 goals.

His final season was his breakout campaign, scoring 28 goals and playing a crucial role in helping the team win the league, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Youth League.

Talking about his decision to leave, Alba expressed surprise at the lack of opportunities with Barça Atletic, particularly after his strong performances with Juvenil A. He also noted that he never trained with the first team.

“I would have liked to feel more valued, but I hold no grudge against anyone. Perhaps my future was not there. I face this new adventure with a lot of motivation,” Alba stated.

During the interview, he made a point to praise Belletti after last season’s success.

“He is the best coach I have ever had. The way he treats the dressing room, his leadership, the discipline… I think all my teammates would agree,” he said.

The young forward also highlighted the potential of several of his former teammates in the reserve team, who he believes could earn a place in the first team.

One name Alba mentioned was striker Oscar Gistau, saying: “He is one of those who could make the jump. He is two years younger than me, but I think he will become important because he has a lot of potential.”

He also praised Marc Bernal, adding: “I have always thought he is unreal. He is a number 6 who wins the ball, gives passes, does everything, but no one talks about him.”

Hugo Alba now begins a new chapter away from Barcelona in the Serbian SuperLiga, where he hopes to earn playing time and attract attention from top European clubs.
