Former Gunner Nathan Butler-Oyedeji scored his first goal in senior football on Thursday, and it led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked.

Arsenal academy graduate Nathan Butler-Oyedeji was released by the club this summer, moving on after two senior appearances, two loan spells away, and countless youth games for the club.

Butler-Oyedeji was prolific for the Arsenal u21s in 2024/25, scoring 11 and assisting six in 17 appearances. Yet senior goals have been harder to come by, with the forward failing to get off the mark on previous loans with Cheltenham and Accrington Stanley.

As a result, it would have been a relief for the 22-year-old when he found the net for Lausanne-Sport away to Besiktas on Thursday night.

Butler-Oyedeji joined Swiss first-tier club Lausanne-Sport this summer, linking up with his new teammates as they attempted to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Following wins over Vardar and FC Astana, Lausanne-Sport had the opportunity to qualify for the final tournament with victory over Besiktas. The two clubs drew the first leg 1-1, leaving Lausanne needing an away win to progress.

Butler-Oyedeji stepped up to provide that result, racing in behind in the 46th minute before finishing clinically for 1-0. Besiktas went down to 10 men and were unable to mount a comeback, so that’s how the game finished.

With Lausanne qualifying for Europe at Besiktas’ expense, the Turkish Super Lig club evidently decided they’d had enough with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Less than two hours after the match, they announced they were parting ways with the former Manchester United man.

Lausanne-Sport will face Fiorentina, Lech Poznan, Omonoia, Kups Kuopio, Breidablik, and Hamrun Spartans in their six League Phase fixtures in this season’s Europa Conference League. But for the time being, Butler-Oyedeji’s focus will turn to Sunday’s league game against St. Gallen.
