The Sheffield Wednesday owner is once again at the centre of financial drama at the club

Reports have surfaced that some lower-paid non-football staff at Sheffield Wednesday have not received their wages on time.

The issue was revealed by The Star, who also claimed that owner Dejphon Chansiri has had to reach out to external business contacts in an attempt to raise funds to resolve the situation.

It follows a similar situation that occurred in March this year, with wages eventually being paid late in that case.

We asked pundit and former striker Don Goodman for his thoughts on the latest saga unfolding with the Owls.

Fans right to be concerned with latest Wednesday development

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: "It's really concerning for Sheffield Wednesday fans, players and staff members.

"They are very close to being hit with an EFL embargo and it could be up to three transfer windows, including this summer's.

"They would be more or less unable to sign players unless they're free transfers and even then, they may not be able to sign if they have a full quota of 23 players.

"So, it's a very, very difficult situation, and you'd understand people connected with Sheffield Wednesday being very, very concerned at this moment in time."

Another concerning sign for Sheffield Wednesday

Owls fans certainly do not need reminding how difficult life has been at Hillsborough Stadium since Chansiri took over the club around a decade ago.

Since then, the club has been through multiple financial issues, including late payment of debts to HMRC, which eventually led to a transfer embargo late last year, selling the stadium to Chansiri to avoid breaching spending rules and even asking fans to chip in for a tax bill at one point.

It has naturally led to questions about the sustainability of the club under Chansiri, with fans staging protests to urge him to sell the club.

This delayed payment of wages is just another concerning chapter to add to the list of mishaps under the Thai businessman, but the Owls are sailing ever closer to a dreaded three-transfer-window ban with this latest issue.

This summer could be fatal for the Owls

Only the genius of Danny Rohl has prevented Wednesday slipping perilously down the league table, and subsequently the pyramid, but the German manager spoke freely about his future towards the end of the season, with heavy suggestions that he is looking at a move away from the Yorkshire club.

Not only that, but on account of social media activity, our Owls Fan Pundit recently told us he fears Josh Windass also departing this summer, who was Wednesday’s top scorer last season by some distance.

Losing Rohl and Windass in the same summer would be a turbulent window for a stable club, so for Wednesday, with the club in turmoil at board level and potentially heading towards a transfer ban, it could prove deadly.

Wednesday only just avoided relegation the season before last, thanks to the mid-season heroics of Rohl, they may not be so lucky next time.
