Enzo Maresca’s press conference last night was all about this evening’s Conference League final, but inevitably there were plenty of queries about other matters, largely relating to this summer and what could be happening with the futures of some players.

Chief among the uncertain is Jadon Sancho, who has been on loan from Manchester United this season. As has been well established now, the Blues can either sign him permanently for €25m, or let him return to United by paying a penalty clause of €5m.

There’s been a huge debate about what Chelsea could and should do – with some even suggesting that buying him and selling him off in the same window would be the smart move.

Maresca himself did little to clear up the confusion when asked about whether Sancho would be a Chelsea player next season:

“I don’t know. I said that when in the last weeks you asked me about different players, I always said the same,” the coach said.

“And the reason why is because it’s the truth. It’s not the moment we have tomorrow, final. Then in 24 hours, 48 hours, we’re going to start to talk about the future. But at this moment, there is not any thought or any decision made on Jadon or any different players.”

Chelsea still scratching heads over best course of action for Sancho

It’s a head scratcher. €25m isn’t much to pay for a potentially top player, but Sancho hasn’t been too impressive all things considered.

Buying him and selling him for a profit might be the smartest move, but given the costs of doing business on that scale, the profit will never be as big as you hope, and it may not be worth the trouble. A major question will be how close the club are to signing an alternative left winger to replace him.
