Marc Guiu closes in on Sunderland move

One move for a player away which has been close seemingly for a while is Marc Guiu’s loan to Sunderland. After initially looking close to a switch to join Ipswich in the Championship, Guiu has ended up with an offer from the newly promoted Black Cats.

If it works out it will be a superior option – we want the young Catalan getting top flight experience if possible. But as always, there’s a risk of loaning a player to a team expected to battle relegation. They will always put their survival above anything else, and young players often aren’t trusted in those circumstances. We’ve seen it with young Chelsea players countless times.

Chelsea insert important clause that should help Guiu succeed

But we have at least put in some defence against that. According to the Deal Sheet, a clause has been inserted which will mean we receive a payment if the striker doesn’t play a minimum number of games. It’s compared to a similar clause in Armando Broja’s loan to Fulham two years ago.

Sources at Sunderland are apparently “comfortable with the situation” and “do not see such a clause being problematic.”

That doesn’t mean they necessarily see him playing – it could just mean that the penalties aren’t significant enough to worry about, especially compared to the potential costs of relegation.

Still, we hope it at least encourages them to use him more. In some ways he’s a similar player to Liam Delap, who had a great season with Ipswich last season despite their relegation. Hopefully Guiu can have a similar impact with Sunderland.
