The Seattle Sounders become the second MLS team to open their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign on Sunday night when they play what is effectively a home match against Brazil's Botafogo.

Fans of MLS will recognize several faces on Botofogo's talented and deep roster, with former New York City FC winger Santiago Rodriguez and former Inter Miami defensive midfielder Gregore among the Brazilian club's regulars.

And Brazil is one of the few other leagues fielding clubs in the competition that plays a similar single-year schedule to MLS, although in most of Brazil it's a fall-to-spring campaign, given the reversed seasons of the Southern Hemisphere. So it's likely you won't see a huge shft from the side that currently sits ninth in the Brazilian Serie A table, but only six points off the league lead with two-thirds of the season still to play.

Seattle has been dealing with a few key injuries, most notably striker Jordan Morris suffering a setback in his bid to recover from a hamstring issue by early March. Center backs Yeimar Gomez-Andrade and Kim Kee-hee could also be out.

Botafogo vs. Seattle Sounders prediction

The Sounders have been a sound defensive club for years, but the combination of their center-back injuries is reason for real concern.

They have more solutions to get over the absence of Morris up front, particularly in tournament-style play where free kicks and other set pieces could play a bigger role. But they're still going to be deserved underdogs against a Botafogo side that is a fair bit deeper.

This should be a competitive match, and the Sounders will draw on their wealth of continental experience to make sure they give a competitive account of themselves. But the Brazilians ultimately find a way to get a critical three points to keep their hopes alive of progressing from perhaps the league's toughest group, one that also includes Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
