It appears that there will be many sporting challenges for FC Barcelona to consider this summer. Not every player will be up for sale, but there will definitely be many who will be considered as potential sales. This is because Barcelona need to generate revenue, but also optimize their squad.

In certain areas, Barcelona believe the squad is understaffed, but simultaneously, there are other positions that are overcrowded it would appear. One such area that falls in the latter category is the central defensive area of the back line, where Barcelona has many options to pick from.

For this reason, many sales this summer that Barcelona are reportedly considering originate from that area. Whether it be the likes of Clement Lenglet or the rumors surrounding Mikayil Faye, it makes logical sense as to why Barcelona would be thinking about reducing the number of players they have for that specific role while also generating revenue.

However, it would appear that a certain guarantee under Xavi Hernandez will not get to keep that same importance under Hansi Flick. According to Luis Rojo of Marca, the new Barcelona coach currently places 23-year-old central defender Eric Garcia above 33-year-old Inigo Martinez in terms of importance to his team.

Moreover, the update states that the secondary player in regards to these two is the one who will not be staying. As of right now, that player happens to be Inigo Martinez, who Barcelona could decide to part ways with this summer in case Hansi Flick does not require his services.

That would consequently mean that Martinez was only able to have one season at FC Barcelona after signing as a free agent following his time at Athletic Club. Garcia, on the other hand, would welcome such news with great joy after returning to the club from his loan at fellow Catalan club Girona, where he seems to have developed quite a lot under Michel’s orders.

At the moment, the likes of Araujo, Pau Cubarsi, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen, Inigo Martinez, and Eric Garcia are all part of the depth that Flick has for the center-back position next season.
