With the highly rated Heggem making a move to Italy to join Bologna for £10m, the injection of cash that the club would receive from the transfer could be huge for Mason's side for one reason.

Having only strengthened their squad in the way of three transfers so far this summer, activity in the market for the Baggies has been somewhat lacking.

As Heggem to Bologna happens, West Brom may no longer feel the need for an influx of cash and could therefore look to other areas of the pitch with the backline looking set in stone as the season kicks off.

One of these areas is the right midfield with the young Tom Fellows being a player that Mason would love to keep at the Hawthorns.

Heggem exit could be vital in keeping Fellows

Heggem played a full 90 minutes in West Brom's Championship opener, which saw them win 1-0 at home against Blackburn, but three days later in the EFL Cup against Derby, the Norwegian was completely left out of Mason's side due to transfer uncertainty.

With the 26-year-old's absence on Tuesday night potentially being a sign of swiftly moving on, Mason's attention can now turn to other areas, such as keeping fan favourite Tom Fellows at the club amidst plenty of transfer speculation for the 22-year-old.

Fellows has been heavily linked with a move away from the Hawthorns, with it being reported by the Express & Star that Southampton as well as the Premier League side, Everton, have shown interest in the youngster.

The highly-rated Fellows had an outstanding season for the Baggies last season and has since become their prized possession, valued at eight-figures.

However, with the club set to receive £10m for the sale of Heggem, his departure could be vital for Mason in keeping Fellows at the club.

Fellows can continue his excellent form this season for the Baggies

With there being no desperation to cash in on the winger now that Heggem is leaving for a big sum of money, Fellows could be key to Mason's future plans as well as keeping the forward line firing this season.

Fellows certainly made a name for himself last campaign, having featured 45 times in the league and contributed with an impressive 18 goal contributions, including 14 assists.

Baggies fans will surely be expecting more of the same from the 22-year-old going into his third season in the first team at the club after progressing through the academy system. If last year was a breakout that saw Fellows become the most creative player in the division, despite the Baggies struggling, this year could see him explode into life in what the club hope is a campaign that sees them reach previous heights.

However, keeping him at the Hawthorns is the next step, which could prove to be more likely if Heggem's departure does in fact go through.

In what's a disappointing situation that sees a top player leave the Hawthorns, that could be at least one positive for the Baggies and Mason to fall back on in the closing weeks of the transfer window.
