Barcelona parted ways with Xavi Hernandez exactly a month after ratifying his position publicly, and it appears a large part of the decision was down to the different visions he and the club had going forward. One of the key issues for him was to see Robert Lewandowski leave the club.

However President Joan Laporta was adamant that there was no way to financially move Lewandowski on and sign a top forward to replace him – certainly Vitor Roque is not yet trusted to be that player. Already it has emerged that Girona’s Artem Dovbyk was one of the options for the Blaugrana if Lewandowski were to have moved on.

Similarly, RAC1 have explained that another name that Xavi Hernandez put on the table as a potential Lewandowski replacement was Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker put away 25 goals this season in 40 appearances, and still has room for improvement at the age of just 24.

It is not the first time that Barcelona have been linked with Isak. He was suggested as a potential option before his €70m move from Real Sociedad to Newcastle, but as was the case then, it seems highly improbable that Barcelona could have found the money for such an operation, even if they had settled on him as a target. Lewandowski will have at least one more season at Barcelona it seems, but the Catalan giants would do well to start thinking about his successor if Roque is not their chosen number nine.
