Scott McTominay scored a spectacular overhead kick to all but seal Napoli’s second Serie A title win in three seasons.
Romelu Lukaku, his ex-Manchester United teammate, scored a stunning second half solo goal and showed how valuable his contributions have been to the Partenopei’s title win.
But McTominay has been the centre of attention in the campaign. His goalscoring tally went to 12 with today’s goal and while that number is certainly impressive, McTominay’s real value is showcased by the importance of those goals.
Beyond his title sealing goal today, the Scotsman has scored at vital points of the campaign. His second goal came against Inter in a 1-1 draw against the fellow title-chasers and the third came in a tight game against Torino, which Napoli won 1-0.
He also scored in a 3-2 win over Atalanta, who were then firmly in the title race. Napoli dropped points against Udinese but McTominay’s goal helped them to a 1-1 draw instead of a defeat to Kosta Runjaic’s side.
In April, the midfielder caught fire again. He scored five goals in three games and his brace took Napoli to a 3-0 win over Empoli and he scored two again a couple of weeks later in a 2-0 win over Torino.
He also grabbed two assists against Genoa, who help the Partenopei to a 2-2 draw. A failure to contribute in that game could have led to further slip-ups for Napoli.
All in all, it is the value of McTominay’s goals that represent his real importance. His goals came when Napoli really needed someone to step up. And Conte’s much-wanted summer signing did just that.
