Wendell delivered arguably his finest display in a São Paulo shirt as the left-back played a pivotal role during their 2-0 victory over Corinthians at MorumBIS, as reported by Arquibancada Tricolor. The defender contributed an assist for São Paulo’s second goal in Saturday’s Majestoso, marking a significant step forward in his tenure since joining the Tricolor.
Speaking after the match, Wendell acknowledged both the personal milestone and the collaborative nature of the win. “I managed to provide an assist and help São Paulo secure the victory,” he said, adding, “Everyone is a part of me being able to do my job in the best way possible.” He also credited a supportive crowd, noting, “The fans were really important in this match—they played with us, and we always want to give them joy.”
Wendell’s performance was reflected in the numbers. According to Sofascore's match ratings, he posted a 7.7—the second-highest among São Paulo’s players for the evening. Over 90 minutes, he completed 33 out of 38 passes, created one big chance, and recorded three key tackles. His attacking contribution stood out with a pinpoint assist, and he successfully completed his only attempted cross and dribble. Defensively, Wendell won five out of six duels, helping limit Corinthians’ attacking output during one of the most charged fixtures on São Paulo’s calendar.
The left-back admitted he is still seeking a consistent run in the starting eleven, remarking, “I haven’t had a continuous sequence at São Paulo yet, but I’m working every day to get better. I haven’t reached my best level, but I’m getting closer.”
Wendell also highlighted the benefit of a recent break in the fixture list, saying, “The pause was helpful for us to rest and clear our minds, which is important. Now the focus is on getting São Paulo out of this situation and delivering big performances.”
His emergence arrives at a much-needed juncture as São Paulo looks to generate momentum following a challenging start to the Brasileirão campaign. With his display against Corinthians, Wendell has now placed himself firmly in the conversation for a regular starting role as the team aims for upward mobility in the league table.
