In his very first season at FC Barcelona, German tactician Hansi Flick is working wonders and building something special.

The Blaugrana look like a team transformed under the 60-year-old tutelage and are dreaming of a ‘treble’ after finishing the last season without any trophy.

Sitting at the top of the table in La Liga and having progressed to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey, Barça secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, beating Benfica 3-1 (4-1 on aggregate).

Barcelona have been one of the best teams on show in the Champions League this season – having initially finished second in the league phase before seeing off Benfica in the Round of 16.

And Flick’s record in Europe’s premier competition makes them favourites to go all the way this season.

Hansi Flick’s unparalleled record in the Champions League

Indeed, the former Germany manager’s record in European competition is nearly flawless. First with Bayern Munich and now with Barcelona, his Champions League numbers are nothing short of spectacular.

At Bayern Munich, Flick managed 18 matches, winning 16, drawing one, and losing just once. That run secured him the Champions League title in 2019/20 – the season when his Bayern side humiliated Barça with a horrific 8-2 thrashing.

The 60-year-old’s only Champions League defeat at Bayern came in the 2020/21 quarter-finals against PSG. Despite winning the return leg in Paris (0-1), the 3-2 home loss in the first leg saw them eliminated on away goals.

Flick has carried the same level of success into his tenure at Barcelona – 10 matches, 8 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.

The only defeat came against AS Monaco (2-1) in the league phase this season, though Barça played nearly 80 minutes with ten men after Eric Garcia’s early red card.

Looking at the full picture, his numbers are staggering – 24 wins, 2 draws, and just 2 defeats. His teams have scored 89 goals and conceded only 28, boasting a +61 goal difference.

At Bayern, he finished with 57 goals scored and 14 conceded, whereas his Barcelona side has already netted 32 goals while letting in 14.

With this exceptional record, it is no surprise that Barcelona enter the quarter-finals, where they will face Borussia Dortmund, full of confidence and as one of the favourites for the title.
