The sides drew 1-1 in their opening game and that was just the start of the difficulty in separating them.
They ended up level on points (three apiece after three draws), head-to-head, goal difference, goals scored and yellow cards shown to their players.
However, Denmark advanced in second place to tee up a clash with host nation Germany, while Slovenia qualify in third and are awaiting their fate in terms of an opponent.
So why did they ultimately claim the runner-up spot?
Initially, it was claimed that it was down to having a higher ranking during European Championship qualification but UEFA have now offered clarity on that matter.
Due to a yellow card shown to a member of the Slovenia coaching staff, assistant Novakovič Milivoje, they fell behind Denmark in the disciplinary standings and into third.
A costly case of dissent!
