Stephen Robinson has admitted that he was surprised with Celtic’s time wasting in injury time. The Scottish Champions had to wait until the 87th minute for the deadlock to be broken, courtesy of a Luke McCowan strike. However, as the clock counted down, the Celtic players decided to keep the ball in the corner.
Speaking after the game, the Irishman told BBC Scotland that hadn’t seen Celtic waste time before and that he was taking this as a compliment.
“Football is cruel. You get punished by good players and Celtic have got a lot of good players.
“I said before the game, look like St Mirren, play like St Mirren and press like St Mirren, don’t play with any kind of fear.
“And I don’t think any of them did.
“They tried to bypass us, we had positive substitutions, and we got beat.
“Celtic were wasting time with five minutes to go.
“I’ve never seen that. So I have to take that as a compliment.”
Celtic were aggrieved not to take the lead through skipper Callum McGregor, who found the net midway through the second half. VAR intervened and adjudged that the player had used his hand to control the ball. Nevertheless, Celtic managed to get the points on flag day.
Celtic didn’t look as sharp as the manager would like, struggling to break down the stubborn Saints defence. Brendan wants to add attacking reinforcements to his squad and the fact that James Forrest and Johnny Kenny were brought on speaks volumes about where the squad is.
