Besiktas boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly on the brink of landing former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay, amidst his bitter public spat with Corinthians.

Depay’s time at United

Depay joined United in the summer of 2015 from PSV Eindhoven. He put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

He arrived at Old Trafford to much fanfare and expectations but he struggled to live up to the hype, only scoring seven goals in 53 total appearances for the club. Just two of these goals came in the Premier League.

The Dutchman lost his spot in the team under Jose Mourinho before his eventual exit in January 2017 for Olympique Lyonnais.

Since then, he has been a bit of a journeyman, having spells at Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and now, Brazilian outfit Corinthians.

However, all does not appear to be well between him and his current employers.

Depay’s row with Corinthians

Depay is currently embroiled in a conflict with Corinthians amid a dispute in wages and owed debt – a situation that has seen the player skip training.

Corinthians are believed to owe the ex-United man £625,000, rising to at least another £1.25m in bonus payments come September.

As this goes on, Turkish news outlet Fotomac reveal that Solksjaer is on the brink of linking up with Depay at Besiktas.

Solskjaer set to swoop for Depay

Besiktas are building an “ambitious squad” as they aim to fight for the Super Lig title next term, and have set their sights on Depay.

Solksjaer’s side are drawn to Depay’s versatility. In addition to playing as a striker, he can also be deployed to great effect on the wing. Corinthians have given Besiktas the green light to pursue Depay, with discussions over personal terms set to begin imminently.

The 31-year-old star has one year left on his contract with Corinthians.
