Brighton's Eiran Cashin could prove to be a shrewd signing for any Championship club this summer.
The transfer market can be difficult for Championship clubs as there are so many moving parts to get a deal over the line.
With budgets tight, bringing in loan players is always a priority for clubs, but you often have to wait for Premier League clubs to decide what they’re going to do with their players.
However, in the case of Eiran Cashin, it appears Brighton have already made a decision - and it should spark a battle from clubs in the second tier for his signature.
The Seagulls have already reinforced their defence with the additions of Olivier Boscagli and Diego Coppola, so it has been reported that they will be willing to let Cashin depart on loan.
The Irishman only joined Brighton in January, but, despite defensive issues, he still barely featured under Fabian Hürzeler, with the boss only using Cashin twice as a sub during the final months of the campaign.
Therefore, it’s hard to envisage him sticking around, and Brighton will know that regular football is best for the development of the 23-year-old at this stage of his career.
It’s common for Brighton to loan players out, and the aim will be for Cashin to develop before returning to the Amex Stadium in 12 months' time, where he will hope to be able to break into the first-team.
Usually, when it comes to loans, there is always an element of risk as clubs are generally sending out young players who haven’t done anything in the game yet.
Whilst they might shine for the U23s, the physicality and demands of league football are entirely different.
Yet, with Cashin, and a key reason as to why he is surely going to be in-demand, you don’t have that worry, as he has already shown he can play in the Championship.
He was part of the Derby team that went down in 2022, and he quickly became a key figure for the Rams over the next few years in League One, which included starring as they won promotion.
Then, on returning to the second tier, Cashin looked a class act in the first half of the 24/25 season, which is why Brighton were tempted enough to shell out up to £9m to sign the player.
In terms of his attributes, the Ireland youth international is a throwback to how he does the basics when it comes to defending.
As his stats show, he ranks high when it comes to clearances, interceptions, tackles and recovering the ball.
It might not always be pretty, but that’s what you want from your centre-back, especially in the Championship when you get tested physically.
That shows he is capable of standing up to that, and with Cashin having worn the armband at Derby in the past, he is a leader who is happy to organise his teammates on the pitch.
Therefore, to get him on loan would be a no-brainer for virtually all Championship clubs.
Of course, Brighton will want whoever takes Cashin to ensure he will get game time, but you could make a case to say he would start at the majority of clubs in the league.
Cashin and Brighton will then want him to be with a club that is competing for promotion if possible, so that will narrow down the number of realistic options if formal offers arrive.
So, it will be intriguing to see where Cashin ends up, but whoever does win the race for his signature will be utilising the loan market to great effect, and it could turn out to be a brilliant bit of business when we look back at the table in May.
