Manchester City are prepared to provide Rodri with a mammoth increase to his salary through a renewed contract at the Etihad Stadium, according to new reports.
The reigning Ballon d’Or winner has attracted transfer speculation this summer, particularly from La Liga giants Real Madrid, who were recently reported to be weighing up a sensational offer for the midfielder. That approach was swiftly dismissed by all concerned.
Rodri’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium runs until the summer of 2027, but Manchester City are keen to avoid entering the final two years of that agreement without clarity over the long-term future of one of their most valuable assets.
Club executives have long been understood to be working on a proposal that reflects not just Rodri’s on-field contributions, but also the Spaniard’s leadership status in a squad undergoing gradual evolution.
The midfielder’s stature within the team has only grown over recent seasons, with decisive performances across Europe and on the global stage culminating in his coronation as the world’s best player in 2024.
As City continue their pursuit of returning to sustained domestic and continental dominance, ensuring Rodri remains fully committed has become a central priority – especially with Real Madrid known to be tracking developments ahead of a possible renewed approach.
Now, according to new information from market insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have a contract renewal offer ready for Rodri that would make him the second-highest paid player in Pep Guardiola’s squad.
When asked what would happen if the 29-year-old received an offer from Spanish giants Real Madrid, Romano insisted – while appearing on DAZN – that Rodri’s priority would be to remain at the Etihad Stadium.
It is widely believed that Rodri is settled in Manchester and has little interest in a return to Spanish football at this stage of his career, and any talk of a proposal being weighed up by Real Madrid has seemingly not swayed the player’s thinking, keeping City confident that an agreement over fresh terms can be reached sooner rather than later.
Should Rodri sign a new deal through to the 2029/30 season, as has been previously reported, it would all but rule out a potential departure for the foreseeable future and represent a significant blow to Madrid’s succession plans.
Internally, Manchester City believe Rodri could become a long-term captain of the squad in the years following Pep Guardiola’s eventual departure, with his mentality, consistency, and experience all seen as invaluable traits.
While nothing is finalised yet, and Madrid may return with further interest in 2026 if the situation remains unresolved, the current trajectory suggests Manchester City are on course to secure the long-term future of one of their greatest ever midfielders.
