After widespread reports that Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies had agreed a new deal with his current club, it appears any faint hopes that Real Madrid had of securing a deal for him will evaporate this week. As the year anniversary of Real Madrid reaching a verbal agreement with Davies approaches, he is set to pen a fresh contract with Bayern.

It was reported two weeks ago that Real Madrid had given up on signing Davies, with Bayern reaching an agreement with the 24-year-old Canadian left-back. The Athletic confirm that following the end of the transfer window, Bayern are now drafting the contracts. Davies is expected to ink the deal before the end of the week.

Los Blancos had agreed terms with Davies in priniciple either in February or March of 2024, depending on which report you read. However agent Nedal Huoseh did not halt talks with other clubs at that point. In recent months, the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City have all shown interest in Davies, but only Real Madrid and Bayern appeared to be realistic destinations for the Canada star.

Davies seemingly lost faith in Real Madrid’s desire to sign him in the summer, when they did not make a move for him. Los Blancos were prepared to leave Davies at Bayern for an entire season with him potentially facing the consequences for agreeing a departure, as they were not keen to try and negotiate Bayern Munich down from their €50-60m asking price.

It was said at the time that Real Madrid were willing to do a deal for €25m, but decided against a move for Davies last summer. They must now rethink their strategy for the position, with Ferland Mendy not far off his thirties, and Fran Garcia yet to fully convince at the Santiago Bernabeu.
